Structured interruption of treatment hastened disease progression in multidrug-resistant HIV.

چکیده
I n t e r v e n t i o n Patients were allocated to STI (4-mo structured interruption of treatment followed by the initiation of an optimized antiretroviral regimen [selected according to the results of the genotypic and phenotypic antiretroviralresistance tests done at screening]) (n = 138) or immediate initiation of an optimized antiretroviral regimen (control) (n = 132). Treatment could be resumed in the intervention group if disease progression or a 50% decrease in CD4 count occurred before 4 months.

Interruption of treatment with individual therapeutic drug classes in adults with multidrug-resistant HIV-1 infection.
BACKGROUND Many antiretroviral-treated human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected patients experience sustained immunologic and virologic benefit despite the presence of multidrug-resistant HIV. We hypothesized that the use of simplified regimens could maintain treatment benefit while preventing viral evolution and reducing drug-related toxicity and costs. METHODS We conducted a 48-week nonr...
متن کاملStudy of HIV seroprevalence in Pulmonary Tuberculosis Patients with Special Reference to Multidrug Resistant Mycobacteria
This study was planned to determine HIV seroprevalence among pulmonary tuberculosis patients, to characterize the isolated mycobacteria into typical and atypical strains and to evaluate the drug resistant pattern of mycobacterial isolates. The study aims to correlate multidrug resistance (MDR) and HIV seropositivity status in pulmonary tuberculosis patients. During the year 1994-1997, 750 pulmo...
متن کاملMultidrug Resistance in Infants and Children
Bacterial infections may cause disease and death. Infants and children are often subject to bacterial infections. Antimicrobials kill bacteria protecting the infected patients andreducing the risk of morbidity and mortality caused by bacteria. The antibiotics may lose their antibacterial activity when they become resistant to a bacteria. The resistance to different antibiotics in a bacteria is ...
متن کاملDrug-Resistant HIV-1 RT Gene Mutations in Patients under Treatment with Antiretroviral Drugs (HAART) in Iran
Abstract Background and Objective: Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy (HAART) can effectively prevent the progression of HIV-1 replication and increase life expectancy. There are numerous causes of treatment failure and the leading one is drug resistance. Thus, we aimed to determine the HIV RT gene drug resistance mutations in patients treated with antiretroviral medications. Material...
متن کاملDevelopment of structured treatment interruption strategies for HIV infection
Human immunodeficiency virus Type-1 (HIV) progressively destroys the body’s ability to fight infection and neoplasm by killing or damaging cells that are part of the body’s immune system. Considerable progress has been made in the treatment of HIV infection through the development of potent, highly active antiretroviral therapies, whose goals are to effect sustained suppression of measurable le...
